Interested to see a lot more acronyms with explanation and perhaps a bit of history? Check out The Jargon File. You have surely seen the following in source code - TODO, FIXME, XXX and NOTE - and only wondered what XXX means? #DECLUTTER SYNONYM SOFTWARE# Similar short answers are used widely in software engineering and the open source community as they make communication more efficient. #DECLUTTER SYNONYM HOW TO# Peter Anvin Cc: Al Viro Cc: Nick Kralevich Cc: Jeff Vander Stoep Cc: Mark Salyzyn Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds Ĭheck out the “ How to Get Your Change Into the Linux Kernel” guide for a thorough explanation. No, this is not about making Github your next Facebook :) After the famous “Dear Github” letter, the platform has introduced proper reactions to declutter comments. Honorary mention: +1 as the short form of ACK (and in many cases, Concept ACK). These answers are usually part of the code review process and you would find them in issues or pull requests in Github. Tested ACK - agree with the changes, reviewed and tested. Untested ACK) - agree with the changes and reviewed them, but didn’t test Concept ACK - agree with the concept, but haven’t reviewed the changes The lexicographer files organize nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs into groups of synonyms, and describe relations between synonym groups. Many projects in the crypto space also use the following ( popularised by Bitcoin’s hacker lingo): IANAL - “I am not a lawyer”, but I smell licensing issues.AFAIK/AFAICT - as far as I know / can tell.WIP - work in progress, do not merge yet.I think this is a good idea, lets discuss NACK/NAK - negative acknowledgement, i.e.Are you new to Github and/or contributing to open source projects? Have you seen short messages like LGTM, ACK, NACK, etc.

YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS ANDROID YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS SOFTWARE YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS CODE Now, what about 24 GB RAM? I said this before, and I’ll say it again, simply don’t. All other configurations are a small niche. YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS SOFTWARE Most software engineers should go for 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. Of course adding dockers to that already ridiculous situation changed things again, but really, 16 GB of RAM should allow you to work with one or two moderately sized dockers. YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS ANDROID Because I am terrible at closing anything, I was simultaneously running WebStorm, Android Studio and an iOS emulator with up to 50 tabs open in Chrome and Safari, and didn’t experience any issues. With 16 GB of memory, however, things change drastically for the better. Having said that, the 256 GB SSD - yes, even with its lower speed - is passable if you’re really just about coding and building apps without using any virtual machines or dockers. This is not unexpected, and while you might really want that to be true, and frankly so did I back in 2020, the reality of it is, that other than occasional and fairly light coding projects, the M2 on 8 GB of memory will simply feel like a bottleneck. I think it has now been established that an 8 GB RAM model will not be suitable for most software developers. Of course, none of these limitations exist if you’re going to connect to an extended monitor, even if it’s just another 13” screen or even an iPad. YOU CALL ME OUT BEYOND THE SHORE INTO THE WAVES GENIUS CODE Sure it’s fine for the odd day you’re on the move, or in a meeting room sneaking in some code while designers fight about font-sizes and shades of grey, but otherwise you’ll be doing yourself a disservice going for a device with such a small screen. It’s a beautiful screen, no doubt, but simply not wide and tall enough for extended coding sessions. If your only screen is going to be the laptop’s screen, I would not recommend getting the M2 Air. No matter how you want to flip reality here, this is a less than 14” screen, and when it comes to coding, I found that be that WebStorm, VsCode, Xcode or Android Studio, after a couple of hours, the screen size becomes a limitation that only the 16” model can solve, albeit only partially. There is of course a downside to smaller size, and that’s the screen real-estate. I genuinely think software companies should start looking at the M2 Air as a viable machine for many of their software engineers, instead of blanket-buying or leasing the top spec 14” or 16” MacBook Pros.īy far the biggest selling-point of the M2 Air is its size and weight. The other benefit of lightness with the M2 is the fact that now you can pop over to a colleague’s desk, or even just walk around the office with the laptop open, holding it in one hand while explaining some code you wrote, doing a commit, whatever it is, you can do it one-handed. In contrast, picking the M2 Air up and walking anywhere, any distance feels a lot more 2022, as you genuinely don’t feel you’re carrying something. The massive downside of that machine is that lugging it to the office and back feels very 90s. With companies doing their 3-year hardware refresh cycles, I have seen many coders end up with the new 16” M1 Pro/Max. I am aware that working in the office is not as trendy as it used to be, but there are still plenty of engineers who do that, even if just once or twice a week. Many of us software engineers are so used to 15” and 16” machines that it’s almost shocking when we manage to do our work on a smaller and lighter machine, and here I want to focus first on the lightness aspect.
